HISTORY:
During World War II, 36,183 units of the Il-2 were produced making it the single most produced military aircraft design in aviation history, as well as one of the most produced piloted aircraft in history along with the American postwar civilian Cessna 172 and the German then-contemporary Messerschmitt Bf 109.
This was the original tank-killer. The aircraft that devastated German mechanised columns, that frustrated Luftwaffe aces, that scared Wehrmacht troops so much they dubbed it ‘The Flying Tank.’ German pilots would report emptying their entire ammunition loads into Il-2s, only to watch them carry on flying.
Anti-aircraft could get direct hits and the Sturmovik would shrug it off. While Soviet reports of combat destruction were, more than likely, exaggerated, the impact that the Il-2 had on disrupting the German war machine was vital to the Red Army’s success and progress on the Front.
