Red Air MD-82 caught fire while making a crash landing at Miami International Airport on June 21, 2022 at approximately 5:30 p.m.. The aircraft was carrying just over 135 people on board with only 4 minor injuries reported. Apparently the front nose gear collapsed upon a hard landing, causing the aircraft to careen through a communication tower and small building with the right wing causing the aircraft to be on fire. The NTSB is currently investigating to find out the cause of the accident.
The low-cost airline started flying in November 2021; is based out of Santa Domingo and MIA. The airline is a venture between Dominican Republic investors and Laser Airlines a Venezuelan airline. Four passengers who were injured have launched a lawsuit against Red Air after the flight crew failed to take action to evacuate passengers in a timely and safe manner. Chaos ensued once the plane came to a stop with many panicking and heading to the nearest exits without guidance from the crew.
