May 30, 2022 an ITA Airways was flying from New York to Rome when there was no answer from cockpit crew for approximately 10 minutes. The incident happened over French airspace when Italy was advised of a possible terror alert. Two Dassault Rafale fighter jets were dispatched and soon after there was acknowledgment from the cockpit that all was ok. It was later deduced that both pilots were asleep at the controls. It was said that there was no risk to the passengers or cabin crew as the aircraft was on autopilot. The aircraft never veered for it's assigned flightpath. The co-pilot was on his scheduled rest time and the pilot denies that he fell asleep at the controls. The captain was fired after an investigation was completed.
