A Stunning Number of Aircraft Incident's This Past Weekend!

Updated: 5 days ago

Where to start?

  1. Jeju Airlines:

December 29, 2024 in South Korea Muan Airport when a Jeju flight Boeing 737 from Thailand to South Korea end with 179 of 181 dead. The flight was on a 2nd attempt after it had indicated a bird strike affecting one of it's engines,  upon landing it was noticed that the landing gear was not deployed and the aircraft did not seem to be configured for landing. It skidded down the runway at high speed and stopped when it crashed into a concrete wall at the end of the runway. 32 fire trucks as well as helicopter fought to contain the fire and pull out the two survivors. This incident ranked as one of South Korea's worst aircraft disasters. It is currently under investigation.

2. Azerbaijan Airlines:

On Christmas Day an Embraer ERJ-190AR operated by Azerbaijan Airlines crashed on approach to Aktau Airport in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people. The aircraft was flying from Baku to Grozny when it was forced to divert to Aktau due to inclement weather. The aircraft attempted an emergency landing when it crashed while attempting to land. 29 people survived the ordeal with initial investigation pointing to the fact the aircraft appears to have been shot down by anti aircraft fire, potentially by Russia. President Putin has apologised for the ordeal however fell short of claiming responsibility. A full investigation is underway.

3. On December 28th a PAL Airlines Dash 8-400 was on approach to Stanfield Airport in Halifax NS, Canada when the flight crew noticed an issue with the left landing gear. The crew prepared for an emergency landing and had informed the passengers of their situation. Upon landing the left landing gear failed causing the left wing and engine to drag along the runway, spitting sparks and a fire started in the left engine. The passengers and crew exited via emergency slides with only minor injuries being reported.

Add incidents from Papua New Guinea, Brazil and Argentina to cap off a deadly December claiming a total of 234 lives. 2024 has been the deadliest year in aviation since 2018. Safety needs to be at the forefront.
